Combined Defense Service Examination (CDSE) Exam Pattern, Eligibility

The Combined Defense Service Examination (CDSE) is conducted twice a year, generally in the month of February and August for recruitment in the Indian Army by UPSC. The notification for the exam out in the month of December and June and easily available on the internet. This is one of the modes for the graduates to settle on defense as their career option. CDSE is for graduate, postgraduate, undergraduate students who want to join Indian Military Academy. Qualified candidates are called for interview referred to as SSB (Service Selection Board).

Who can apply for this CDSE Exam?

Male candidates can apply for Army, Air Force, and Navy. Women can only apply for Short Service Commission in Non-tech Field for Indian Army.

Eligibility Criteria for applying CDSE exam:

The basic eligibility criteria are degree equivalent in graduation, post-graduation with mathematics and physics as a compulsory subject in 10+2. The selection criteria are different for the Indian Army, Indian Air-force, and Indian Navy respectively.

Age limitation of CDSE Examination:

Age limitation is an extremely important aspect of selection in armed forces. Army, Navy, and Air Force have their specific Age standard limit according to their publishing notification. 19-24 Years in Indian Military Academy, 19-22 Years in Naval Academy, 19-23 Years in Air Force Academy and 19-25 Years in Officers’ Training Academy.

Physical Standards:

As the armed forces are known for their tough job one should have minimum physical standards consistent with their criteria. Physical standards include physical fitness with mental fitness. Eye vision should be curable with glasses minimum 6/6.

Educational Qualification:

  1. Indian Military Academy & Officer’s Training Academy: Degree of a recognized University or equivalent
  2. Naval Academy: Sc. with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineer
  3. Air Force Academy: Sc. with Physics and/or Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineer
