LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Display used in smartphones:

The name refers to the array of liquid crystals illuminated by a backlight, and relatively low cost makes it a popular choice of display used in smartphones. It is the most common type of display in the market. It performs quite well in the direct sunlight as an entire display is illuminated from behind. Two primary LCDs are TFT and IPS.

1. TFT (Thin Film Transistor):

Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display is the cheapest LCDs on the market. This type of LCD display is constructed so that each pixel on display is attached to both a capacitor and a transistor. The strength of TFT display includes a high contrast ratio and a low cost of production, resulting in a lower-cost mobile phone. Suffering from a narrow viewing angle, It has poor visibility indirect light and high power consumption.

2. IPS (In-Place Switching):

In-Place Switching (IPS) displays are currently the best LCD displays in the market. Compared with TFT display, it features consistent colour and wide viewing angle, even indirect light. As it is expensive to produce, so typically it is seen on Mid-level mobile phone and above.

Apple uses a high-resolution version of IPS LCD display dubbing with Retina which helps not to discern the individual pixels on the screen with the human eye.

There is also another type of LCD display, i.e. Super LCD display (SLCD) which is used in HTC mobile phone. It differs from others as there is no gap between the outer glass and touch screen sensor. This results in a closer feel and less lens glare compared to IPS technology.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) Display used in smartphones:

It is used for quite some time. It has developed and upgraded to several advancements and subtypes by the use of several new technologies.

Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED display) use a layer of carbon-based organic material set between anode and cathode and between two layers of glass. Electricity runs in between two conducting sheets, lighting the carbon sheet and illuminating display.

Most modern OLED display on the smartphone is the AMOLED display. Apple included an OLED display on its iPhone X that called Super-Retina HD Display.

1. AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode)

Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) is the current iteration of OLED display technology most used in phones. This displays have much purer blacks and consume less energy when black or darker colour is displayed on the screen. Also, it has a rapid refresh rate, but visibility is entirely down in sunlight. It is thinner and flexible compared to the LCD display.

2. Super AMOLED:

It is proprietary Samsung Technology. This AMOLED display improves on touchscreen technology. Touch-sensitive sensors are placed on to the display rather than a separate layer. It is the thinnest display in the market till now.

Almost every Samsung smartphones are AMOLED display mobile or Super AMOLED display phones.

There is another type of LED display that is MICRO-LED display which is a new technology that we may see in future smartphones. MICRO-LED display is the next evolution in LED display technology.

Currently, LG manufactured IPS LCD display for iPhones. Samsung has built displays for the iPad. Not all Samsung devices come with AMOLED displays. This is not only a case of a better display but also a matter of pros and cons of display used in smartphones.

The point is numbers and technical data; these two are worth considering while comparing the screens. But the performance of these displays in real-world is more critical. It is impossible to measure a display on paper. But you need to experience it in real life to know if it is too cold or warm for you. You may like its saturation, brightness or contrast levels, what its viewing angles are like, and so on.
